Vacuum insulation goes back to just before 1900 when it was the English scientist Sir James Dewar who invented a type of flask that sealed one bottle inside another and removed the air from between them creating a vacuum. Sir James Dewar, and a couple of glassblowers from Germany who manufactured for Dewar ran a competition to name the company and came up with the well known ‘Thermos’ name and brand. A resident of Munich suggested this name in a competition to name the new product, the word was derived from the word ’Threm’ in greek meaning hot.
